It is important to note that the
following pointers apply not only to formal meditation sessions, but also to
day-to-day life :
<< All you need to do is remain
like the sky… The Source of mind is unborn. It is as boundless as the sky… So
when you remain in the natural state the Unborn Nature self-appears
spontaneously. There is neither subject nor object. There is no need to practice
meditation in a special way or focus on anything. This Nature is called Buddha
Nature… There is no way to search for it or find it, no way to focus on it; so
simply leave it as it is… This natural state is not separate from our own
Nature of Mind… You will achieve this state and find it out.
If you don’t focus or use your consciousness in a particular way, you will realize this Nature… This Nature cannot be fixed in words, neither can it be apprehended by consciousness; not even a Buddha can see it by means of consciousness… The way to remain in the Nature is to simply leave it as it is without searching, finding or focusing on anything…

Don’t look at past thought. Don’t
expect or look for the future thought. Don’t grasp or perceive the present
through consciousness… Abide in Nature and do nothing; leave everything as it
is… Whatever happens, just let it be.
Remain like the sky.
Don’t change anything either
internally or externally. Don’t concentrate on exhaling or inhaling. Don’t use
your consciousness and don’t focus on anything… Keep in the Natural State
naturally, loosely and comfortably… Leave everything open as it is… Whenever
spontaneous thoughts, feelings and images arise within your consciousness,
leave them freely and your condition will be like the sun shining in the sky.
Don’t do anything. This Nature is clear and aware by itself… Just leave it
directly as it is. Don’t remove anything… This teaching is a very important key
for releasing all thoughts, feelings, images and matter and liberating them
into the Nature…
You don’t need to expect the result;
it will be received spontaneously… This is called the Activities of Dharmakaya…
Mental consciousness will be spontaneously released into Buddha Nature and this
non-material Nature will become ever more blissful. This is the view of the
Buddha… This is the Great Nature. Everything liberates. There is nothing to do,
nothing to change, Don’t doubt; just keep on. Garuda flying in the sky…
When you are stable in the Natural
State, integrate all your everyday activities of body, speech and mind with
this and they become Actions of Dharmakaya. The whole of existence is
integrated and unified with the Natural State… Simply continue in contemplation
--- without blocking anything, leave everything as it is in this State. It is
called Self-Aware Wisdom… This State is completely beyond consciousness. It has
nothing to do with consciousness, so don’t try to grasp anything or interfere
using consciousness in any way. Just leave your presence clear as possible; leave
it alone… Whatever you experience, leave it as it is. No matter what feelings
come up, don’t care about them and don’t follow or check them… Remain like the
sky.
Relax into the totality… The key
precepts are nonstriving and effortlessness.

The Advaita Teaching of Nisargadatta Maharaj : A Synopsis
All you need is to get rid of the tendency to define yourself.
You will revert to your natural state spontaneously and effortlessly. You will reach the Source of being, life and consciousness. Shift the focus of consciousness beyond the mind. Refuse all thoughts except one: Who am I? Just live your life as it comes. Keep quietly alert, inquiring into the real nature of yourself.
Perception is based on memory and is only imagination. The world can be said to appear but not to be. Only that which makes perception possible is real. You agree to be guided from within and life becomes a journey into the unknown. Give up all names and forms, and the Real is with you.
Know yourself as you are. Distrust your mind and go beyond. Do not think of the Real in terms of consciousness and unconsciousness. It is utterly beyond both. It gives birth to consciousness. All else is in consciousness. Nothing you can see, feel or think is so.
Go beyond the personal and see. Stop imagining that you were born. You
are utterly beyond all existence and non-existence, utterly beyond all that the
mind conceives. Question yourself: Who am I? What is behind and beyond all
this? Soon you will see that thinking yourself to be a person is mere habit
built on memory. Inquire ceaselessly.
How can Reality depend on experience when it is the very ground, the very basis
of experience, the very fact of experience? Just be aware of your being here
and now. There is nothing more to it.
In reality you are not a thing nor separate. You are the infinite potentiality, the inexhaustible possibility. Because you are, all can be. The universe is but a partial manifestation of your limitless capacity to become. You are neither consciousness nor its content. You are the timeless Source. Disassociate yourself from mind and consciousness. Find a foothold beyond and all will be clear and easy.
You are
the Supreme Reality- all there is. Just trust and remember that. Wisdom lies in
never forgetting the Supreme Absolute as the ever-present Source of
both the experiencer and the experience. I am beyond consciousness and so in
consciousness I cannot say what I am. Yet I am. The question “Who am I?” has no
answer in consciousness and therefore helps to go beyond consciousness.
Remember there is no person, only a mental picture given a false reality by
conviction. All you need to do is to cease taking yourself to be within the
field of consciousness.
You are free of being a percept or a concept. Abandon all conceptualization and
stay silent and attentive. Be earnest about it and all will be well with you.
Give up the idea of being what you think yourself to be. Let go of the idea
that you are not aware of yourself as the ever-present, changeless
inexpressible Reality. Just let go. Your difficulty stems from the idea that
Reality is a state of consciousness. Essence is independent of consciousness.
Self-knowledge is a new dimension altogether.
Pure, concentrated longing will take you speedily to your goal. If you could keep in mind what you do not know, it would reveal to you its secrets. When you want nothing, seek nothing, expect nothing, then the Supreme State will come to you uninvited and unexpected. Stop making use of your mind and see what happens. Do this one thing thoroughly. That is all.
Your weakness is due to your conviction that you were born into
the world. In reality the world is ever recreated by you and in you. Once you
realize that the world is your own projection you are free of it. You need not
free yourself of a world that does not exist except in your own imagination!
Realize that you are the Eternal Source. There is no reality but That. So how
could you be “other?” And accept all as your own. Such acceptance is true love.
Don’t try to understand! Don’t rely on your mind for liberation. Go beyond it
altogether.
Be aware of being aware. Broaden and deepen the field of awareness. You are beyond space and time, uncaused, the very matrix of existence, the Supreme Absolute, the Noumenon- not unknowable, but unperceivable, un-objectival, inseparable- neither material nor mental, neither objective nor subjective- the Source of being, life and consciousness. You are the all-pervading, all-transcending Reality. Behave accordingly.
The actual experience will dawn upon you in no time. No effort is needed. Have faith and act on it. All will happen by itself: You are the subtle cause of the entire universe. All is because you are. Grasp this point firmly and deeply and dwell on it repeatedly. To realize this as absolutely true is liberation.
What you need will come to you. Whatever you come across, go beyond. Paramakash is the timeless and spaceless Reality, mindless, undifferentiated, the infinite potentiality, the source and origin, the substance and the essence, both matter and consciousness, yet utterly beyond both. It cannot be perceived, but can be experienced as ever witnessing the witness, perceiving the perceiver, the origin and the end of all manifestation, the root of time and space, the prime cause in every chain of causation.
Your idea that you were born and that you will die is absurd: Both logic and experience contradict it. Behave as what I say is true and judge by what actually happens. I know the Source of all experience. From moment to moment the little I need to know to live my life I somehow happen to know. The Supreme Absolute is at the root of and utterly beyond all. You are That.
Don’t you see that the Supreme Reality is what makes everything possible? Know life as pure radiation from the inexhaustible Source. There is nothing to practice. To know yourself, be yourself. Stop imagining yourself to be this or that. Just be. Let your true nature emerge.
Don’t disturb your mind with seeking. The very absence of obstacles will cause Reality to rush in. You will know the Light of Absolute Awareness in all its clarity and the world will fade out of your vision. Awareness takes the place of consciousness. In consciousness there is the “I” who is conscious, while awareness is undivided. Awareness is aware of Itself. The “I am” is a thought, while awareness is not a thought. There is no “I-am-aware” in awareness.
Awareness is not an attribute. One can be aware of
being conscious , but not conscious of awareness. Awareness is not a form of
consciousness. One who is aware is beyond every experience, utterly beyond
awareness itself. The fundamental Reality is beyond awareness, beyond becoming,
beyond being and not-being. Give up all idea of the person , of personal
attainment. Find out what you are.
There is no effort in witnessing. You understand that you are the witness only,
and understanding acts. If in the state of witnessing you ask “Who am I?” the
answer comes at once, wordless and silent. You find yourself utterly beyond the
subject and the object. Both exist in you, but you are neither. You, the
Supreme Absolute, are the very source of reality. Collect your energies in one
great longing. My words are true and they will do their work. Enlightenment is
a certainty. It is your destiny.
Discard every self-seeking motive and Reality will find you. Who am I? Go into
it deeply. Find out your real being. You are the beingness of being, utterly
beyond the universal even. You are the non-dimensional Source of all
dimensions. As you keep on giving up, you grow spontaneously in intelligence
and power and inexhaustible love and joy. The Absolute can be reached by
absolute devotion only. Don’t be half-hearted.
The “person” is a shell imprisoning you. Break the shell. There is nothing you
need. Nothing perceivable is real. Even space and time are imagined. All
existence is imaginary. Only the Unlimited is real. Question the limits. Go
beyond. Set yourself tasks apparently impossible- This is the way. Look at
consciousness as something alien, superimposed. Then suddenly you are free of
consciousness.
Whatever you feel needs to be done happens unfailingly. Selfless
and intelligent, all the powers of the universe are for you to command: You are
the Source Absolute. This is your natural state. Believe me, you are the
Supreme Reality. You are the fullness of perfection here and now.
Investigate what you know to its very end and you reach the unknown layers of
your being. Go further and the unexpected will explode in you and shatter all.
The crucial question is: “Who am I?”
Just see the person you imagine yourself to be as a part of the world perceived
within consciousness; and look at consciousness from the outside; for you are
not the consciousness. You, the Supreme Reality, are utterly beyond. Tat Tvam
Asi.

I DON’T TELL A LIE: WHATEVER EXISTS HAS NO SUBSTANCE. IT IS
UNREAL. THE PRESENT MOMENT IS UNREAL.
WHEN YOU KNOW THE SOURCE OF THIS BEINGNESS OR “I”-CONSCIOUSNESS - THAT IS LIBERATION. NOT UNTIL THEN.
YOU ARE NOT EVEN THE UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS (BRAHMAN) BUT THE PARABRAHMAN, THE WITNESS OF THAT UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS.
IN REALITY THERE IS NO DEATH BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT THE BODY. LET THE BODY BE THERE OR NOT BE THERE. YOUR EXISTENCE IS ALWAYS THERE. IT IS ETERNAL.
YOU KNOW YOU ARE. HOW DO YOU KNOW IT? AND WITH WHAT DID YOU KNOW IT? THIS IS THE SUM TOTAL OF MY TEACHING NEEDED TO PUT YOU ON THE RIGHT TRACK, ITS VERY QUINTESSENCE--- FIRST OF ALL YOU WITNESS THAT YOU ARE. STAY PUT THERE- ONLY WITH THIS “YOU ARE.” JUST BE THERE. THEN WITH THE HELP OF THIS “YOU ARE” YOU ARE WITNESSING THE WORLD. STAY PUT THERE. YOU MUST BE PRESENT THERE ONLY, AT THIS POINT - THE “YOU ARE” POINT, BEREFT OF ALL CONCEPTS.
DON’T PRACTICE THIS THING- ONLY DEVELOP YOUR CONVICTION- STABILIZE IN THE CONVICTION: I AM THE KNOWLEDGE “I-AM.” AT THAT STAGE YOUR INDIVIDUALITY IS COMPLETELY EXTINGUISHED. YOU NO LONGER HAVE A PERSONALITY. IN PLACE OF THE LOST INDIVIDUALITY HAS COME THE MANIFEST TOTALITY- BUT YOUR TRUE NATURE IS UTTERLY APART FROM EVEN THE MANIFEST TOTALITY.
YOU ARE TO TRANSCEND CONSCIOUSNESS.
THERE IS NO VOLITION AS FAR AS AN INDIVIDUAL IS CONCERNED. THINGS HAPPEN ON THEIR OWN. WHEN THAT IS SEEN, THERE IS ALREADY A CERTAIN PEACE OF MIND. NOTHING REMAINS TO BE DONE. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN OR NEED DO. WHATEVER HAPPENS IS A MERE MOVEMENT IN CONSCIOUSNESS.
UNLESS THE CENTER OF PERCEIVING ITSELF IS CHANGED TO THE NOUMENON YOU WILL NEVER GET AN IDEA OF YOUR TRUE NATURE- ONLY WHEN “I-AM-NESS” DISAPPEARS WILL YOU BE FREE OF CONCEPTS.
WHEN ONE STOPS THINKING THAT ONE IS LIVING, AND GETS THE FEELING THAT ONE IS BEING LIVED, THAT WHATEVER ONE IS DOING, ONE IS NOT DOING, BUT ONE IS MADE TO DO, THEN THAT IS SORT OF A CRITERION.
WHATEVER YOU MAY THINK YOU HAVE UNDERSTOOD, WHATEVER IS YOUR KNOWLEDGE, IT IS ALL A CONCEPT. YOU ARE NOT THE CONCEPT BUT THE KNOWER OF THE CONCEPT.
UNDERSTAND THIS FIRST MOMENT, WHEN YOU UNDERSTOOD “I-AM.” ONCE YOU GRASP THIS, THEN YOU ARE THE HIGHEST OF THE GODS, THE POINT AT WHICH EVERYTHING ARISES. ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND THIS, YOU ARE RELEASED FROM THAT POINT- I, THE ABSOLUTE, AM NOT THIS “I-AM-NESS.”
NOTHING IS TO BE DONE. MERELY SIT IN CONTEMPLATION AND LET THE CONSCIOUSNESS UNFOLD ITSELF, UNFOLD THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT ITSELF.
THERE IS NO DOER AT ALL, NO ONE HAS AN IDENTITY TO DO ANYTHING. IN THE FIELD OF CONSCIOUSNESS, EVERYTHING JUST HAPPENS.
THERE IS NOTHING. YOU ARE NOT.
ONCE YOU REALIZE THE TRUTH THAT CONSCIOUSNESS HAS COME OVER YOU, YOU WILL NEED NOTHING ANYMORE.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE AN ENTITY “I.”
WHEN YOU ARE IN A POSITION TO OBSERVE CONSCIOUSNESS, YOU ARE OUT OF CONSCIOUSNESS. THEN YOU ARE THE AWARENESS STATE, THE VIJNANA OR JNANA STATE. ARE YOU ABLE TO FATHOM YOUR OWN IDENTITY? COULD YOUR IDENTITY DAWN UPON YOURSELF?
THE “I-AM” IS THE CONSCIOUS-LIFE FORCE. BUT I AM UTTERLY BEYOND THAT. I AM THE PRINCIPLE, THE ABSOLUTE, THAT MAKES THAT POSSIBLE.

1. Let go of all seeking.
2. It is already that which you are.
3. Only in present awareness of simply what is is there freedom from self-image.
4. Simply let what is be there.
5. There has never been anyone to liberate.
6. There is nothing you can do.
7. All you can do is come to see that there is nothing for you to do. That is a huge step. It is revolutionary.
8. Rest as that which never comes and never goes away.
9. Let go and rest in that which is, and you will surely meet with your Original Nature.
10. There is nothing you can do. Where is this “you” to do anything?
11. There was never a chooser or a doer.
12. There is no one to be liberated.
13. Fall intimately in love with the gift of presence in what is.
14. You are not existence. You are that which allows existence to be.
15. Just drop this imaginary “person.”
16. You don’t need help. Just as you are now is how it needs to be.
17. Your thoughts are not yours and did not originate from you. Thoughts are fed from consciousness.
18. What you are is the still, si lent Awareness that sees consciousness and its activities going on.
19. Let go of everything for the wonder of timeless presence.
20. Simply drop seeking and there it is.
21. What you are is utterly beyond anything you ever believed.
22. There is nothing more to become.
23. There is no role that the mind plays in awakening.
24. Just relax into what is.
25. Dropping the seeker is awakening.
26. There is nothing you can do about it because it is already the case. Only your belief that it isn’t attained stands in the way.
27. Awakening lies beyond any concept of awareness.
28. There isn’t any personal awareness. There’s no one to be aware. There’s just “this” and you are that --- a realization which is impossible to describe.
29. Everything is the Essence Absolute, or the No-Thing manifesting as creation; and you are the source of that manifestation.
30. Die into what is.
31. When the mind gives up and becomes inactive, your Original Nature- Samantabhadra- simply arises.
32. You are the Essence Absolute, the Source, the No-Thing from which everything arises --- everything, including the person you’ve believed you are. Now no identifying with anything at all --- only with That, which is utterly beyond words. Just sit back. Don’t expect anything --- and your Original Nature appears.
33. Something within you sees you experiencing. This something is your Original Nature, what you really are; and has nothing to do with the individual you have thought you are. You are the Absolute, the still, silent source of all that is, the Absolute Awareness. You, the Absolute, are not a “part” of the whole, but the source of the whole.
34. Something within you sees you doing something, looking at something, etc. This something is your Original Nature, what you really are, and has nothing to do with the individual you have thought you are.
35. Awakening is inevitable.
